Pompom Heaven

One of the things I love most about what I do, is that I get the opportunity to work with other artisans. I get to learn from them and we get to exchange ideas. Recently I was able to visit Madroqueo and his wife Johanna at their home near Antigua, Guatemala. Madroqueo runs a stall in the local artisanal market. He works with jade, quarts, onyx and other semi-precious stones. He makes exquisite pieces out of these materials. He also taught his wife Johanna how to make the tassels and pompoms that they supply me with. I was fortunate enough...

Lake Atitlán

This week I spent time in Panajachel on beautiful lake Atitlán. This bustling town has long been a Mecca for backpackers and bohemian culture. It is also the main access point to Lake Atitlán, a large lake in the highlands surrounded by steep mountain sides and volcanoes. The twelve towns that dot the shore of the lake each have their own draws. I was able to visit San Juan la Laguna and  Santiago Atitlán. Like most of these towns one often arrives by boat and climbs the steep roads lined with shops full of local wares, eventually arriving at the...

Inspiration and Perspective

Last week I got the first sample of one of the Market bags that I am developing with some artisans here in Antigua Guatemala. I have worked with Cristian before, he along with his bothers, sisters and wife learned theirs craft from his father Don Juan. I feel so fortunate to work with him directly to develop our line. We have made two samples together since I arrived in Guatemala and I am over the moon with the latest prototype.

Sun, Fun & Familia

This week I was fortunate enough to stay on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, where the sun shines intensely during the hot days and the ocean breezes are cool at night. The beaches here are black volcanic sand that quickly disappears into the constant surf. Staying in my cousin's home, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to be surrounded by so many creative individuals. My cousin's husband is an architect and as a result their beach house is rich with unique artistic touches. My cousin is also a talented seamstress in her own right. She has lovingly created...

Geometry & Pattern Abound

I have been fascinated with geometric patterns for some time now. The more I am exposed to them the more I am amazed how common they are; appearing in nature as crystals or as the architecture that makes up the plants that surround us. It amazes me that when I discover a new pattern I can always trace it back to something I have already seen in the past. It might just be the trained eye of merchandiser that helps me to see these visceral relationships. When I was in Guatemala City last week saw these window bars which are...
